This season, as it focuses on so many side characters, it feels like we're getting bits and pieces of a bunch of plot threads without it really being clear where things are going overall or what Ainz and Nazarick are trying to do long term, which leads to the ending feeling kind of lackluster. When it was focusing on the members of Nazarick in the first season, things were somewhat slow but it was always clear what direction they were headed in. The last major issue is that it results in a plot that's a lot more scattered and incoherent. Another issue is that though there's still some focus on members of Nazarick, overall less of a focus is placed on them and hence less time is spent on them overall which results in many that were focused on heavily in the first season and that I had come to like quite a bit not getting as much screen time. However, this season drops that entirely and it doesn't feel like Ainz is progressing at all anymore. Ainz seemed like he was beginning to have a character arc in the first season. The first issue with this is that this means that the main characters get less development. doesn't really feel like much of a main character anymore with entire episodes where he doesn't matter at all. However, it's only partially shown from their perspective, focusing just as much on side characters that get pulled into their various plans, schemes, and experiments. That's not to say that they're not important in that the plot still revolves around them. The biggest difference by far is that Ainz and Nazarick simply aren't the primary focus anymore. However, the structure and hence the overall anime feel incredibly different. The second season of Overlord takes place immediately after the first. Tl dr: A sequel series that changes tremendously by focusing on new characters and in a sense flash over substance, but does quite well at it. However, I feel like they went for "low effort, high profit" kind of production, that's why I'm giving it a below average score. I guess the fanservice was done properly afterall. Shame that we don't see much character development, too.Įven though this anime is average at best as a whole, I wasn't bored at all while watching it, didn't skip a scene. Considering that the show's success is heavily reliant on fanservice, the lack of Albedo and Shalltear sucks major balls, even though they are substituted by various cutiepies in their absence. Except for Climb (the aforementioned simple boy), that guy's only ability is to steal screentime from relevant NPCs. Almost every single character introduced and developed in both halves of this season is to some degree likeable and/or interesting. OP is meh, ED is quite memorable on the other hand.Ĭharacters are the redeeming quality of this series. Nothing amazing in the VA department, either, they are all being overly melodramatic as always. Soundtrack is totally plain, I didn't ever notice music playing during the scenes. I guess the animation is okay-ish, but nothing worthy of special praise. Not sure what I'm thinking about the general consensus that Madhouse releases tend to be polished and beautiful. Ainz gains some prestige, Sebas gets the kitten. What's even worse, nothing from what I've mentioned comes to any kind of conclusion. It's dragged-out, then suddenly rushed, then dragged-out even more and then again rushed to the finish. Well, whatever it is, the pacing of the second half is all over the place. about what, exactly? Royal intrigues? Underground crime? A simple boy unknowingly haunted by a yandere genius? Ainz doing his undercover stuff? Sebas getting game by being a badass? Demiurge being a fuckboi in all of that? Evileye being cute?. have no idea how is the outcome relevant to the story in long-term, but I will give it the benefit of the doubt, at least there was an outcome. Not the most enjoyable narrative, but executed quite well. We basically have 2 halves, first one is about a questionably motivated genocide carried out by the main cast, mostly from the POV of the victims and focused on Cocytus. I should be talking about the story now, but. Pretty much the same goes for Ainz and the OP. Jesus, they can't even do fanservice properly, more than half of Albedo's screentime consists of her static images in the ED. I can see the light novel being worthwhile, but the adaptation lacks in many aspects, namely pacing, action, script, character interaction.
